Uttar Pradesh to revive heritage sites as luxury hotels, ET TravelWorld


Uttar Pradesh is revamping its tourism sector by transforming historic forts and palaces into luxurious heritage hotels. This initiative aims to provide unique accommodation options for tourists while preserving the state’s rich heritage. Major hospitality brands like Leela Hotels, the Indian Hotels Company (Taj Group), Neemrana Group, Mahindra Hotels and Resorts, Oberoi Hotels, Hyatt Regency and Lalit Hotels have expressed interest in developing and managing these heritage properties.

Mukesh Kumar Mesharam, Principal Secretary, Department of Tourism and Culture, Uttar Pradesh said that Uttar Pradesh tourism has been soaring to newer heights in recent times with a significant rise registered in both domestic and inbound tourism. To facilitate the tourists looking for experiential tourism we are developing infrastructure and facilities that will cater to tourists coming from all economic segments. For tourist seeking a luxurious and unparalleled experience, we have initiated dialogues with several prominent hotel groups that have expressed strong interest in revitalizing palaces and havelis in line with the new tourism policy on PPP mode.

ITC’s hotel group expands in Rajasthan with Mementos Jaipur

Located near Amber Fort, Jal Mahal and City Palace, Mementos Jaipur features 64 exquisitely designed suites and villas spread over 8 acres. The property boasts traditional architecture, spacious courtyards and ornately decorated interiors reminiscent of a Rajasthani palace. It also features multiple dining options, including an exclusive Indian restaurant “Kebabs & Kurries”, an all-day dining restaurant “Amber Pavilion” and a bar “Mayur”.

The state’s tourism policy requires a minimum investment ranging from INR 30 crores to INR 100 crores for transforming heritage properties into hotels. Based on the level of investment, heritage buildings will be categorized and investors will be offered various incentives and concessions.First phase of transformation targets several iconic sites, including Chunar Fort in Mirzapur, Barua Sagar Fort in Jhansi, Jal Mahal in Barsana, Lucknow’s Chattar Manzil and Kothi Roshan-ud-Daula and Shukla Talab Haveli in Kanpur. Following government approval, the project will expand to Mastani Mahal and Lake Palace in Mahoba, Tehroli in Jhansi, Tal Behat Fort in Lalitpur and Rangarh Fort in Banda.

Beyond forts and palaces, the program extends to other historical buildings including one at Akbar’s hunting ground in Kirawali, Agra and Baradari in Bithoor. Lucknow’s Kothi Gulista-e-Iram, Kothi Darshan Vilas and Baradari in Wazirganj, Gonda are also slated for conversion.

These heritage hotels will offer more than just opulent accommodation. Guests can expect wellness centers, museums, heritage restaurants and thematic parks, creating a holistic cultural experience. The project is also expected to generate significant employment opportunities within the state.
