This highlights the importance of shared experiences as the number of Indians with international loved one’s flies. A staggering 77 per cent of respondents have family abroad, with over half 61 per cent reporting at least 3-4 close relatives relocating internationally in the past 5 years. The survey also explores the financial ties that strengthen these bonds. A significant 55 per cent of respondents send money abroad monthly, primarily for gifts 49 per cent, education 17 per cent and daily expenses 10 per cent.

The upcoming T20 World Cup is seen as a major factor in strengthening international connections. Domestic air passenger traffic in India is projected to double by 2030, buoyed in part by a state-subsidised initiative that aims to connect underserved domestic airports and has shifted the development focus away from major metropolises such as Mumbai and Delhi towards fast-developing smaller cities such as Chandigarh and Hyderabad.

“This survey unveils the power of cricket in uniting Indians and their loved ones abroad. Beyond being a sport, cricket fosters cultural connections, strengthens family bonds, and even influences financial activities, as seen by increased travel intent during key tournaments,” says Shrawan Saraogi, APAC Head of Expansion, Wise.“At Wise, we understand the importance of shared experiences in staying connected to loved ones abroad. So, whether you’re traveling or sending money for daily expenses, education, or for special occasions, it’s important to consider the exchange rate you’re getting, whether there are hidden fees, and the speed of these transactions. Use Wise to ensure your money arrives with your loved ones on time and without hidden fees,” he added.

Despite frequent international money transfers, a lack of transparency remains a concern. A surprising 88 per cent of respondents were unaware of exchange rate markups, hidden fees that inflate costs. This highlights the need for clearer fee structures and exchange rates. To celebrate the T20 World Cup, Wise has partnered with The Grade Cricketer for a road trip across America. They’ll showcase the ease of managing finances internationally with Wise while highlighting cricket’s unifying power.
