India’s urban unemployment rate 6.7% in Q1 2024: Govt survey



Unemployment rate in India’s urban areas for those aged 15 and above decreased from 6.8 per cent in the first quarter (Q1) last year to 6.7 per cent in the same quarter this year, according to the country’s Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS).  

The unemployment rate for females decreased from 9.2 per cent in Q1 2023 to 8.5 per cent in Q1 2024, a release from the ministry of statistics and programme implementation said.

Labour force participation rate (LFPR) in urban areas for people aged 15 and above rose from 48.5 per cent in Q1 2023 to 50.2 per cent in Q1 2024.

The worker population rose from 45.2 per cent in Q1 2023 to 46.9 per cent in Q1 2024.

Female LFPR in urban areas rose from 22.7 per cent in Q1 2023 to 25.6 per cent in Q1 2024, reflecting an overall increasing trend.

The worker population ratio (WPR) for those aged 15 and above rose from 45.2 per cent in Q1 2023 to 46.9 per cent in Q1 2024. Female WPR in urban areas rose from 20.6 per cent to 23.4 per cent during the same period.
