93% of Indian travellers go green as eco-conscious adventures on the rise: Booking.com report, ET TravelWorld


Indian travellers are prioritising eco-conscious adventures with a massive 93 per cent seeking sustainable trips in 2024 according to Booking.com Report. This environmental awareness is driven by a deep appreciation for nature as 76 per cent acknowledge travel’s impact. Travel inspires positive change for 75 per cent of Indian travellers with sustainable practices witnessed on their journeys motivating them to adopt similar habits at home.

Beyond just the scenery Indian travellers are taking a holistic approach. While stunning landscapes remain a draw 73 per cent recognise travel’s impact on natural environments followed by local economies 62 per cent and communities 50 per cent. This ensures responsible tourism that benefits all. Nearly three-quarters 72 per cent value access to nature when choosing sustainable accommodations. Additionally, 93 per cent actively plan trips that minimise their carbon footprint by walking, cycling or using public transport.

According to Santosh Kumar, Country Manager, India, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Indonesia at Booking.com, “Today for Indian travellers, sustainable practices not only enhance their travel experience but also inspire them to adopt similar habits in their daily lives. There is a desire to have a positive impact, with travellers more forthcoming in exploring activities that are driven by sustainability, whether it is indulging in cultural experiences or exploring local markets. Through collective efforts and a shared vision for sustainable tourism, we at Booking.com aim to make it easier to experience the world in a more mindful and responsible way.”

5th biggest economy ranked 39th in TTDI 2024 Index: India’s travel industry needs a reboot

A WEF study shows global tourist arrivals are projected to reach pre-pandemic levels in 2024, reflecting pent-up demand and sector resilience. Within Asia-Pacific, Japan world’s 4th largest economy with GDP (USD 4112 billion) leads with 3rd rank globally in TTDI Index followed by Australia on 5th. China world’s 2nd largest economy with GDP (USD 18,536 billion) ranks 8th in the top 10 while India dropped 10 positions to 39th globally.

The responsibility for sustainable travel is shared. Travellers believe the travel industry-airlines and hotels plays a key role, alongside travellers themselves and major travel platforms. This collaboration can create a greener future for tourism. Recognizing the surge in eco-conscious travel, several Indian destinations boast a high number of sustainably certified accommodations. These include Bandipur, Coonoor, Kozhikode, Candolim, Agra, Jodhpur, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Vadodara and Chennai. Booking.com report also reveals that:

  • 75 per cent of Indian travellers are inspired by sustainable practices to be greener in everyday life.
  • 95 per cent prioritize authentic, local and cultural experiences.
  • 94 per cent of travellers shop at small and independent stores.
  • 93 per cent plan trips with walking, cycling or public transport.
  • 72 per cent value access to nature at eco-friendly accommodations.
