55.57% of RMG workers in Bangladesh women: Data from trade bodies



Women comprise 55.57 per cent of over 50.17 lakh workers in Bangladesh’s garment factories, state minister for labour and employment Nazrul Islam Chowdhury informed parliament recently.

Data from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) show 52.28 per cent of the 3.3 million workers in garment factories affiliated to the trade body are women.

Statistics from the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) indicate 62 per cent of the 1.7 million workers in the knitwear sector are women, the minister was cited a saying by domestic media reports.

However, the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics’ 2022 Labour Force Survey recorded 43.16 lakh workers in the sector, with 37.51 per cent being women.
